Taliban militants on Wednesday shot dead Pakistan’s only Christian government minister for challenging a law that mandates the death penalty for insulting Islam, the latest sign of instability in a country where many fear radical Islam is becoming more mainstream. Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti is the second senior official this year to be assassinated for opposing the blasphemy law. Provincial governor Salman Taseer was shot dead by his own bodyguard in January.
These killings, along with frequent militant attacks and chronic economic problems have raised fears for the future of U.S.-ally and nuclear-armed Pakistan, where an unpopular coalition government is struggling to cope.
Witnesses said the attackers scattered leaflets signed by “The Qaeda and the Taliban of Punjab” at the attack scene, which read: “This is the punishment of this cursed man.”

The blasphemy law has been in the spotlight since last November, when a court sentenced a Christian mother of four to death after her neighbors complained she had insulted Prophet Muhammad. On Jan. 4, the governor of the most populous province of Punjab, Salman Taseer, who had strongly opposed the law and sought a presidential pardon for the 45-year-old Christian farmhand, was killed by one of his bodyguards who had been angered by the governor’s stand.Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti earlier said he had been receiving death threats since the Bibi case.

THE governor of Pakistan's powerful Punjab province was shot dead last night by one of his guards because of his opposition to the country's blasphemy laws.
Salman Taseer killed by guard
The killing of Salman Taseer in the capital was the most high-profile assassination of a political figure in Pakistan since the slaying of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the assassination of his ally and ordered an immediate inquiry into the killing.
Interior Minister Reham Malik said Mr Taseer, 56, had been shot because of his high-profile opposition to the blasphemy laws.
The assassin was a member of governor Mr Taseer's security team, Mr Malik said.
"He confessed that he killed the governor himself because he had called the blasphemy law a black law," Mr Malik said.
"He has confessed his crime and surrendered his gun to police after the attack."
Mr Taseer was a member of Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party and a close associate of President Asif Ali Zardari, her widower.
He had spoken out against the blasphemy law in recent days. Islamists have defended the controversial law.
Police official Mohammad Iftikhar said Mr Taseer was gunned down after arriving at Islamabad's Khosar Market, a shopping centre not far from his home and popular with Westerners and wealthy Pakistanis.
Local administration chief Amir Ahmad Ali said Mr Taseer died in hospital of his wounds.
Five other people were wounded as other security personnel responded to the attack.
Another police official, Hasan Iqbal, said a pair of witnesses told the police that as the governor was leaving his vehicle, a man from his security squad fired two shots at him. Mr Taseer then fell, while other police officials fired on the attacker. It was unclear if the attacker was wounded.
"I was in the market. I heard the gunfire and hit the ground," said Shaukat, 28, a labourer.
"While running for shelter I saw a man in uniform being grabbed by police. Later on, police officials said he was the attacker."
Police and anti-terror forces surrounded the area and the market closed after the attack. A silver Toyota with a flat wheel was parked on one side. Blood was smeared on the road in two places.
Mr Taseer was one of the most moderate political voices in the ruling PPP, which this week slumped into a political crisis when its junior coalition partner walked out of the federal government.
As well as the blasphemy laws, he was outspoken against the Taliban and other Islamist militants hunkered down in the country's northwest, and which have made increasing inroads into Punjab in recent years.
Mr Taseer made his money as a chartered accountant and had set up consultancy firms and a brokerage house before going into politics.
He was minister for industry and production under former military ruler Pervez Musharraf from 2007 to 2008.
Dozens of Pakistanis are sentenced to death each year under the blasphemy law, which dates back to the 1980s military rule of General Mohammad Zia ul-Haq.
Most cases are thrown out by higher courts and no executions have been carried out, but human rights activists have long complained that the law is used to settle rivalries and persecute religious minorities. The law has come under greater scrutiny recently after a Christian woman was sentenced to death for allegedly insulting Mohammed.
Under pressure from Islamist parties, the PPP said recently it would not pursue changes to the law, which has long vexed human rights activists.
An intelligence official interrogating the suspect, identified as Mumtaz Qadri, said that the elite-force security guard was boasting about the assassination, saying he was proud to have killed a blasphemer.
Other members of his security detail were being questioned, Mr Malik said, who added that the security for Mr Taseer was provided by the Punjab government.
"We will see whether it was an individual act or someone had asked him" to do it, Mr Malik said.
Mr Gilani announced a three-day national mourning period.
"National flags will remain at half-mast in the wake of the assassination of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer," a statement said.
"He was the most courageous voice after Benazir Bhutto on the rights of women and religious minorities," said a crying Farahnaz Ispahani, an aide to Mr Zardari and friend of Mr Taseer.

Wagah Border Lahore
Wagah Border Lahore
A border dispute has become a daily party
Every late afternoon, just before sunset, the Indian and Pakistani military meet at the border to engage in an extraordinary 20-minute ceremony of pure theatre. The border-closing ceremony elicits machismo and posturing from the proud young soldiers on both sides, but also, despite the two countries’ uneasy relationship, a stunning display of harmony. It starts around 5.30pm in summer and 4.30pm in winter. It’s worth getting there early – though avoid the stampede when the crowd charges along the chicken run leading to the grandstands. Foreigners are allowed to sit at the front in the VIP area anyways – or, better, grab a seat at the roadside near the gate, right in front of the high-kicking action.
At this point the young soldiers are milling about with their air of self-conscious debutantes and the real action is in the people who run at the border gates carrying a huge Indian flag. A compere stokes the crowd’s patriotic fervor, as they cry “Hindustan Zindabad” (long-live India). The Pakistanis are equally vociferous, except during Ramadan, when the stands are noticeably quieter, and are segregated by sex.

At the sound of a bugle call, the representatives of both countries – the Pakistani Rangers, and the Indian Border Security Force – march quickly to the gates. Upon stopping, these guards throw forward one leg, as high as their own heads, and stomp it down to the ground. This is done while glowering fiercely at the opposite side. They than announce their contempt for each other with strong, emphatic displays of thumbs-down.

A Ride to India Across Persia & Baluchistan
If Harry de Windt, that dashing 19th century Long Rider, had been allowed to follow his original plan, he would have galloped to India via the Central Asian satraps of His Imperial Russian Highness. When suspicious St. Petersburg put a halt to Harry’s Russian route, the intrepid equestrian explorer determined to reach his goal via the Shah’s empire instead.
What followed was a ride to remember as Harry de Windt, lecturer, author, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and equestrian explorer par excellence, saddled up in 1890 and set off to examine the forgotten corners of Persia and Baluchistan.
Captain Harry Willes Darell de Windt (Paris, 1856 - 1933) was the ADC to the Rajah of Sarawak, an explorer and author of many books about his travels (overland from Paris to New York via Siberia, Peking to Paris, Russia to India via Persia, Trough Savage Europe), to name a few.
The following is an excerpt from his journal, with accounts of local customs in Baluchistan some of which were completely barbaric.
